With all the other things we try to make or teach our cats to do (or NOT do), it may not even occur to us that our babies aren’t drinking as much water as they should. Or, if your feline is especially picky, you may have trouble getting him or her to drink water out of the dishes you’ve placed specifically for them for that purpose.
Cats need lots of water to stay properly hydrated; more than most of us realize. Even a touch of dehydration can cause severe urinary tract and other health problems for your cat. So, if your cat is too picky to drink water now, or if you just want to ensure that your cat always has plenty of water, read on!
Are you one of the feline hoomans who battles your cat whenever he or she sticks his or her face under the tap every time you turn on the sink for five seconds? Have you caught your cat trying to drink out of the toilet, especially as soon as you flush it? These are what we call “fountain drinkers.” These babies prefer drinking water as fresh as it comes: straight from the faucet or in fresh bursts from the clean water that fills your toilet (well, as clean as toilet water can be… but they don’t understand that!).
Obviously, most of us can’t afford to leave a faucet running all day long, and many of us aren’t at home, or are unavailable, to run to the sink every time our cat wants a drink of water. However, some cats simply will NOT drink water (or at least, not enough to remain fully hydrated) if they cannot drink from the sink.
Riddle us this: have you ever considered an automatic water device? Something like the Adorable Electric Cat Water Fountain Automatic Flower Water Dispenser, perhaps? It’s an auto dispenser for water (hence the name!) that looks very much like a lucrative toy for your cat. It has more than one point from which the water streams (for people who have more than one fountain drinker, or a cat who just likes to change up the routine once in a while), as opposed to the single-stream water dispensers that just pour straight down into its bowl.
Its precious design isn’t just for hooman delight; having an open top and streams that flow outward and down assures that your cat has plenty of room to get his or her face close enough to the water to drink comfortably, without dousing his or her face! Plus, the filter that keeps out debris and hair ensure that your cat gets 100% clean water at all times, which will make you both feel better!
Two Sets of Picky Paws?
Perhaps you are a proud hooman belonging to more than one cat, and maybe both/all of your cats prefer to drink in different ways (or from different dishes). This can be almost nightmarish for us as cat lovers, because pleasing every picky taste can be exhausting, and fruitless, if we can’t get it just right.
Don’t stress or boot your baby out in the cold just yet! In line with the automatic dispenser train of thought, we also have something called an Automatic Water Dispenser/Food Cat Feeder. This is a low-maintenance system that literally means you don’t have to do a single thing once you fill and place them! These are also great for felines that are picky in different ways; those who have a fascination with drinking out of faucets and those that prefer drinking out of bowls.
We’ve spent a little time talking about how many cats do NOT fit the normal feline stereotypes, including the “water hating” category. However, sometimes it seems as if our felines dislike water so much, it’s against their religion to even drink it (or at least drink enough to stay healthy and hydrated).
One thing many feline hoomans don’t realize in instances like these is that it may not be the water itself (unless the water is dirty or full of chemicals that are hazardous to animals). Certain food and water bowl materials produce a distinct smell/flavor, simply because of the material(s) used to make them. Our cat’s senses are enhanced and more sensitive to many things, and some are more so to certain metals, plastics, glasses, etc.
In these cases, perhaps a more natural material would coax your cat into drinking healthy amounts of water. We have our Eco-Friendly Bamboo Fiber Food and Water Bowls, which offer a natural and eco-friendly (hence their name!) alternative to the usual aluminum, glass, plastic, steel, etc., options for pet feeding and watering dishes. Even the pickiest of cats seem to love these bowls, because they cannot detect traces of the terrible flavors emitted from dishes made from those other materials.
However, if after switching to these bowls, your cat still turns up his or her nose to water too often, try brewing catnip tea, or even sprinkle a little catnip into the water bowl. Catnip offers a great deal of incentive for any nip-lover to drink (or eat) anything you put in front of him or her.
